Introduction to the GDPR Series

Are You Ready?  The GDPR and What You Need to Know.

Welcome to the “Are You Ready? The GDPR and What You Need to Know” Series.  Over the next 11 months, we will explore the various articles of the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), adopted by the European Union (“EU”) in May 2016 and set to take effect in May 2018.  These next few months are key for companies, lawyers, business women and men, and any other stakeholders to form an understanding of the GDPR and how it will affect her or his business.  Even with this advanced notice, it is predicted that more than 50% of the companies that affected by the GDPR will not be ready to comply with the regulation by May 2018.  See Dan Panitz and H. Bruce Gordon, “Back in the GDPR: Using Data Mapping to Arrive at a Privacy Impact Assessment,” Legaltech News, March 16, 2017.   Ignorance of these changes, and the many other privacy regulation changes occurring around the globe, is no excuse:  a cohesive data strategy should include active assessment and integration of privacy regulation requirements.

This Series will guide you through the key articles of the GDPR and how these article provisions will likely affect businesses, law firms, and other organizations who regularly collect, process, and store personal data.  The language of the Regulation can be found here:

I welcome your thoughts and insights into the GDPR, and any questions that you may have.  XPAN Law Group regularly counsels clients on the potential impacts of the GDPR and how to best prepare for when the GDPR enters into effect and how to continue to comply with obligations under the regulation.
